Arthritis and Joint Health: What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Published on September 14, 2012 by Dr. Cameron Mcintyre

The theme for AOR this month is Arthritis and Joint Health, so I thought this was a topic worth discussing.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a progressive inflammatory bone disease that usually begins in the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis and then migrates up the spine through the lumbar, thoracic and cervical areas.  Deterioration of the bone and cartilage can lead to fibrous tissue deposits and eventual fusion of the spinal segments, commonly referred to as “bamboo spine”.

AS affects approximately 1% of Canadians with prevalence being three times more likely in males than females.  While the direct cause is unknown, there are genetic tendencies, autoimmune activity and potential risk factors with gastrointestinal and genitourinary infections and inflammation as well as psoriatic arthritis. Conventional treatment relies on anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid therapy and surgical intervention. (Source: www.phac-aspc.gc.ca)

My clinical opinion to help this condition should centre on inflammation management and improving digestive integrity.  We have had some great new innovate products to the AOR line that help target inflammation management, such as:

  • Inflammation Relief – Which utilizes new nanotechnology techniques to enhance bioavailability. The products combination of Curcumin, Boswellia and Ashwaghanda are geared at significantly reducing the inflammatory cascade, reducing the pain and swelling of chronic joint conditions.
  • nanoVAILABLe Boswellia –  Another member of the nano line - Boswellia - contains a larger dose of Boswellia, than found in Inflammation Relief. Boswellia is ancient Ayurvedic herb, in which the product is standardized for Boswellic acids and has shown potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain) effects.  In addition, Boswellia helps to prevent the degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), key components of articular cartilage and those commonly degraded with conventional anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS). Using the nano technology, this has significantly increased the herbs bioavailability.
  • InfaNOX – Combines the powerful anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin, along with the enhanced circulatory and antioxidant properties of nitric oxide.  This formula is another highly effective formula for relief of pain and inflammation.  Curcumin selectively reduces COX2 enzyme activity linked to inflammation, while leaving the activity of the COX1 enzyme intact and thus eliminating the common gastric, renal and cardiovascular complications of pharmaceutical NSAIDs and COX2 inhibitors.  A real win-win.

To facilitate enhanced digestive integrity I would look to the following supplement:

  • Probiotic 3 – With over 50 years of formula research behind it, this combination probiotic blocks the growth of pathogenic bacteria, enhances the growth of beneficial bacteria and normalizes the inflammatory response. (Coming Back Soon!)

As with management of all disease, it is important that you consult a qualified health care practitioner to help you facilitate the appropriate choices for your individual needs.
