Magnesium is one of those supplements that is very well known for its benefits throughout the natural health community. Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body. It is true that liquid vitamins and herbs ‘may’ (with HUGE emphasis on may) be better able to get into your system than supplements in capsule or tablet form. BUT this is not true in all cases. Good quality supplements can be formulated to be absorbable in pill form when factors of bioavailability are taken into account and proper forms of vitamins are used.
Take for example Vitamin C, and many other vitamins, which can breakdown quite easily when exposed to air, meaning the potency can be reduced once you open the bottle. Fish Oil or liquid products are other examples of items that can be easily oxidized when oxygen is allowed to enter the product. Or if the manufacturer does not follow good manufacturing practices, proper packaging or proper storage of the product, liquids can easily be degraded.
Other examples of nutrients that can be easily degraded include:
- Vitamin A, which needs to be protected from oxygen and light
- Vitamin D, which needs to be protected from oxygen
- Riboflavin (B2) which needs to be protected from light
- Pyridoxine (B6) which needs to be protected from light
These are just a few examples of parameters that can degrade ingredients in supplements. Being very conscious of the factors that can degrade your supplements is important, as is ensuring the manufacturer uses processes to protect these essential nutrients in your supplement.
What makes products more bioavailable is following the factors of bioavailability:
- Digestion – Taking into account solubility and stability
- Absorption – Where and how, as well as particle size
- Metabolism/Excretion – Liver for first bypass metabolism and kidneys for excretion
Putting a bunch of ingredients into a liquid base does not confer an automatic increase in bioavailability. The ingredients have to be able to emulsify or solubilize themselves and ‘blend’ into the liquid base, to receive the benefits of ‘increased solubility’ and receive this improved route of absorption into the body. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin D, can ‘blend’ themselves into an emulsion blend, for enhanced absorption and thus, becoming more ‘bioavailable’. Not all ingredients have this ability to be so easily emulsified in liquids. A ‘blending’ of these agents needs to happen to improve the solubility, stability and absorption of the ingredients involved.
