Mushrooms and fungi have been used in medicine for thousands of years. They have been used traditionally to provide immune support, treat and prevent infections, protect the liver, and offset the negative effects of stress.
Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC®) is a patented compound isolated from the mycelium of the medicinal mushrooms of the basidiomycete species of mushrooms, including Shiitake (Lentinus edodes). It was developed in the 1980s by Japanese scientists from the University of Tokyo, with the main aim of developing natural ingredients for diseases associated with modern lifestyles.
Technical insights:
- Country of origin is Japan
- AHCC is an extract of the mycelia of hybridized shiitake mushrooms. This is proprietary and it contains several subspecies of the shiitake mushroom
- The active ingredients of AHCC include acetylated short chain polysaccharides (~5kDa) called alpha-glucans (AHCC is a rich source of alpha-1,4-glucans), which is very quickly absorbed for optimal bioavailability
- Freeze dried form: Light brown fine granules
