Also known as brahmi, water hyssop, thyme-leaved gratiola or herb of grace.
This plant has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a “brain tonic.” Legend has it was used by Vedic scholars to memorize lengthy texts. It is one of the more cherished herbs due to its neuroactive properties and its ability to rejuvenate the central nervous system. In India, bacopa is often given to babies in the hopes that it will open the gateway to intelligence.
Bacopa has traditionally been used for improving cognitive functions such as those needed for math and memory skills, for decreasing angst and for reducing mental fatigue at work. It improves the processing of visual information to help increase the rate of learning, lower the rate of forgetfulness, and improve the ability to consolidate new information. The compounds responsible for these activities are the bacosides – bacosides A and B, which are also proposed to have antioxidant activity, neutralizing free radicals and preventing lipid peroxidation, a process that is linked to neurodegenerative diseases. Bacopa has also been studied in children with and without ADHD, and benefits have been shown in memory and learning in both scenarios. May also diminish stress and mental fatigue at work if taken over time.
