Magnesium Oxide
The magnesium oxide compound is very small, so large amounts of elemental magnesium can be delivered without taking up much space in a tablet or capsule. This form of magnesium is one of the most used in supplements and can be used to stabilize mixtures and as a laxative as it has a stool-loosening effect. While this form is not considered to be the most well tolerated in stand-alone magnesium formulas, it can deliver some magnesium at low doses.

Populations that are most at risk for magnesium deficiency include people with gastrointestinal diseases, type II diabetes, alcohol dependence and older adults. Early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and weakness. Worsening deficiency leads to numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms and coronary spasms.
