Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a spice commonly used in East Asian curry dishes. Though most of the health-promoting effects are being attributed to the active molecule curcumin – research is shifting to understand the synergy of other components of this powerful root.
Plant-derived polysaccharides have potent immunostimulatory effects, as they can stimulate activity in various immune cell systems. The long polysaccharides in turmeric are called turmosaccharides or turmacin, and are the water-soluble compounds from turmeric root that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, independent of curcumin.
However, it also helps with curcumin bioavailability indicating that taken together, both curcumin and turmacin extracts provide synergistic actions against pain and inflammation associated with multiple disorders.
