Valeriana officinalis root
Improves sleep quality
Studies done on valerian extract and sleep structure showed an improvement in REM sleep, and overall restorative rest with remarkable low adverse events during the trial.
Reduces the time it takes to fall asleep
Researchers speculate a possible mechanism by which valerian may cause a sedative effect is by increasing the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) available in the synaptic cleft. GABA slows down nerve cell activity instead of exciting it. Valerian extract may block an enzyme that destroys GABA, which means that more GABA is available for a longer amount of time.
Valerian root has a long history of traditional use in a wide range of cultures to promote calmness, relaxation and sleep. Valerian root contains fractions known as valepotriates that regulate the central nervous system
It should be noted that few studies found any benefit in short term supplementation with valerian extracts. Rather researchers recommend that dosing for at least 14 days yields the best results.
