The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is essentially a system of muscular tubes that propel materials along its length, to enable the absorption of nutrients and the excretion of waste products. The wall of the GI tract is sealed by a layer of intestinal epithelial cells. As well as selectively absorbing nutrients and excreting waste products, the GI wall acts as a first line of defense by preventing potentially harmful toxins or bacteria in the gut from entering the blood. Welcome back to part two of my Meditation for Beginners blog post series!
By now you might’ve found meditation to be a little difficult (or perhaps even boring!) Your entire lifetime your mind has had free reign. Removing your mind’s ability to distract you is one of the key benefits of meditation.
First off, the reason why I became involved in AOR in the first place was a product called Zen Theanine. L-Theaine, the active ingredient, is an extract from green tea found to stimulate a relaxed but focused state. There is a reason why green tea and mediation are so closely related. This relaxed state calms your mind down and makes it easier to focus on the task at hand, be it mediation or any other activity. I take it before games, as an example.
Secondly, nothing is boring or hard. You might be thinking I don’t know what I’m talking about but the reality is, these are concepts we assign to tasks. You will have the thought “I’m bored.” This is your mind telling you it’s boring. You decided to sit down and mediate, so acknowledge the thought and return your focus to your breath.
Lastly, yoga is very good for getting your mind to settle. In fact, yoga was created as preparation for meditation. Having a relaxed body will help your mind be at ease. As you meditate you’ll see the positives stretching prior can give you. This is the reason many yoga classes end with shavasana (corpse pose). Next yoga class you’re in you can use this time to get a great few minutes of meditation in!
So here are three tips to help you on your journey. Always remember meditation is not supposed to be to achieve something. Also, remember to have fun and don’t fault your mind (or anything else) for interfering. Your mind will try to mesmerize you with thoughts and when you notice this, acknowledge it for what it is, ‘thinking’ and return to your breath.
