BioavailabilityGota and colleagues did a safety and bioavailability study on healthy volunteers versus patients. Subjects were given doses between 400 and 1,200 mg of curcumin in solid lipid particle form (equivalent to 1 to 2 capsules of Curcumin Active). All doses showed significant absorption into the bloodstream over 8 hours with no adverse events.Longvida® Curcumin in HumansA human trial on curcumin showed statistically significant effects on clinical endpoints in a healthy population. The fact that such a low dose (80 mg) was needed to achieve effects in only 30 days is an interesting and unique finding as well, and adds to the substantial amount of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data compiled on Longvida®. The results of the study suggest that curcumin can produce beneficial effects in people who are without immediate disease states. The study was conducted on 38 healthy middle aged people between the age of 40 and 60 who were either given a dose of 80 mg/day of Longvida® curcumin extract for four weeks or were a part of the 19 person placebo group. The study is particularly interesting because the relatively small dose of curcumin, from Longvida® which was used, exerted a variety of health promoting effects leading researchers to presume that a significant amount of the curcumin was absorbed, although not tested directly.Blood sample readings collected from test subjects to assess nitric oxide and sICAM molecules were notably affected by the curcumin. Interestingly, other markers of inflammation and free radicals/toxic species that cause inflammation and damage to cells were also significantly lowered. Both direct and indirect antioxidant actions of curcumin were evident in the subjects; these findings are consistent with in vitro and animal studies used to measure increases in curcumin induced antioxidant enzyme activity.

Q: Is nanotechnology safe?A: It really comes down to what substance is being discussed. If it’s a natural substance, a food or spice for example, breaking down the particles just makes it easier for the body to digest and absorb, and doesn’t cause a problem. However, if it’s a potentially dangerous substance, then applying nanotechnology is only going to make it more dangerous, for exactly the same reason – the body absorbs it more readily. The idea of nanotechnology has actually been used for centuries in human nutrition and isn’t that new or novel. All nanotechnology really is, is breaking down a substance into very small particles (flour and icing sugar are two examples). In India, when turmeric is used in a curry, it is often broken down into a very fine powder, and then emulsified and heated in oil to release its full absorption potential. Scientists suspect this is why Indian people benefit from the health-promoting effects of the curcumin, which usually isn’t well absorbed by the body. The technologies applied to our Optimized Curcumin mimic this effect – first it is broken down into a fine (nano-sized) powder, and then the beadlets of curcumin are coated with a lipid matrix. Both of these aspects are equally important for absorption purposes, and this is similar to how Indian people have been consuming curcumin for centuries.Q: Why does AOR still offer Curcumin-95 if Longvida® curcumin is better?A: There will always be consumers who abide by holistic philosophy and prefer pure, natural extracts that have not been modified or altered by modern technologies.Q: What is the most beneficial supplement? Turmeric extract, curcumin or curcuminoids?A: Curcumin is the only molecule that is studied in majority (99%) of animal and human studies.Q: What is meant by bioavailability?A: Bioavailability is the amount of molecule that reaches the target site. In the case of curcumin it is how much curcumin reaches the wrist or knee joint to relieve pain and inflammation.  Many factors can impact bioavailability, including the solubility of the molecule, its resistance to degradation by digestive enzymes, how well it is absorbed and how quickly it is metabolized in the body.Q: What is curcumin’s bioavailability?A: Only about 2%, meaning that only 2% reaches the target site. For example, for a 500mg of curcumin-95 only 10mg will reach the target site! Since at least 8g of curcumin is required to detect any measurable levels in the blood, that would mean taking twenty capsules of 500mg curcumin-95!Q: How does AOR increase curcumin’s bioavailability?A: AOR uses clinically proven and safe Longvida® curcumin, which uses Solid Lipid ParticleTM (SLP) nanotechnology patented and licensed by the University of California Los Angles (UCLA). This technology enhances bioavailability in the following ways:

  • Increases solubility by reducing particle size to nanometer range. The smaller the particle the higher the solubility. The small size of the particles also improves absorption.
  • SLPTM technology is used to coat the tiny curcumin particles in a fatty coating. This prevents acid, bile and enzyme digestion and also protects the curcumin from being metabolized into other, non-beneficial molecules by the body’s enzymes.

Q: Are AOR’s formulas clinically studied? A: Yes. Recently a human clinical study was conducted on cancer patients (Gota et-al 2010). The study clearly showed that the bioavailability (as measured by free plasma curcumin levels) was at least 100 times higher than that of regular 95% curcumin extract! Not only that but there was a significant reduction of pain and inflammation and improved quality of life in the patients. Q: Besides inflammation, what else can curcumin help with?A:  Researchers at UCLA are currently looking into the application of bioavailable SLP curcumin for Alzheimer’s disease. Preliminary results are very encouraging, and show that curcumin may help to remove proteins from the brain that are associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
