Benefits of Flavonoids
Flavonoids, also called bioflavonoids, are a group of antioxidants with a range of biological activities such as inducing protective enzymes, and protecting against bacterial and viral diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease, and cancers.
Flavonoids work synergistically with vitamin C likely due to their ability to recycle oxidized vitamin C: when antioxidants neutralize free radicals, they become themselves weak pro-oxidants. Flavonoids can return vitamin C to its active antioxidant form.
Bioflavonoids and Neurodegenerative Diseases
Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation play major roles in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The citrus flavone naringin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in the central nervous system and has been shown to protect against neurodegeneration in animal studies.
Other studies have shown the flavanone, naringenin, to improve learning, memory and cognitive impairment; as well, hesperidin has been shown to reduce aluminum concentrations in the brain – a major risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease – and reduced the behavioural impairments in rats caused by aluminum chloride.
Vitamin C may improve blood pressure in cases of hypertension due to its effects on the vessel endothelium and vasodilation.
Flavonoids also positively affect the endothelial cells of blood vessels. The regular intake of bioflavonoids is associated with a decrease in cardiovascular diseases, with many human studies correlating citrus flavanone intake to decreased risk of stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases.1
