Tyrosine & Iodine
Thyroid hormones T3 and T4 are composed of tyrosine and iodine. Tyrosine is also used for the production of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
C. forskohlii and its active constituent forskolin have demonstrated the ability to increase the production and release of thyroid hormones.
In a review of seven clinical trials, C. forskohlii significantly improved body composition in overweight and obese participants1. One double-blind study in overweight men showed that forskolin treatment led to significant decreases in body fat percentage and fat mass, and increased free testosterone levels, compared to placebo.2
Bacopa has historically been used for improving memory and cognition and animal studies have shown its ability to increase T4 concentrations. Double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in older adult humans have shown improvements in auditory visual learning tests and better retention of new information.3
Copper, Zinc and Selenium
Copper stimulates the production of T4 and prevents over-absorption of T4 in blood cells by controlling calcium levels in the body.
Zinc plays an essential role in transforming T4 into the active hormone T3. The hypothalamus also requires zinc for the production of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).
Selenium is required for the proper function of iodothyronine deiodinase enzymes which control the synthesis and degradation of T3. Selenium has also been linked to the function of regulatory T cells, and has been shown to decrease anti-thyroid antibodies.
