If you have had a cold sore before, you can usually tell when it’s about to happen. Maybe you have been feeling stressed, tired or sick when you feel a tingly, itchy feeling around your lips. Eventually, the sore emerges, blisters and erupts. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), not to be confused with HSV-2 which causes genital herpes. About 90% of adults test positive for this virus, even if they have never had a symptom of infection. The virus can be contracted by simple activities like sharing utensils or kissing someone who has a sore. Once contracted, the virus lays dormant in the body until the body’s immune defences are compromised such as times of stress and fatigue. Cold sores are sometimes confused with canker sores which often occur inside the mouth but, canker sores are not caused by HSV-1. One of the best ways to prevent the onset of a sore is to support the immunes system such as by practicing stress reduction techniques. Supplementing with the amino acid L-Lysine is a popular and effective natural remedy for cold sores.
