The word “fibromyalgia” comes from the Latin term fibro (fibrous), myo (muscle) and algia (pain). It is a highly debilitating condition that causes widespread pain and tenderness and decreases quality of life. In addition to pain and fatigue, individuals with fibromyalgia can also experience other symptoms such as mood disorders, sleep disturbances, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and restless leg syndrome. Since there is no objective test for fibromyalgia and because its root causes and effects in the body are unclear, it is diagnosed by ruling out other chronic conditions like arthritis. Although the cause is unknown, between 80-90 % of individuals diagnosed with the condition are female. Since most medical doctors are still largely unfamiliar with fibromyalgia, treatment typically involves managing the pain and other symptoms or conditions associated with the disorder. Studies have shown that nutrients such as magnesium and 5-HTP can help reduce pain and psychological symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia.
