Most women have experienced PMS at some point in their lives and dread the thought of it. Although symptoms vary from woman to woman, it is mostly an unpleasant consequence of hormone fluctuations and menstruation. Menstruation is the shedding of the lining of the uterus and a “normal” menstrual cycle, ranging from 25-36 days and without major symptoms is an indicator of hormonal balance. It is controlled by a complex interaction of hormones, estrogen and progesterone being the commonly known ones. Progesterone deficiencies are highly common in women and, an imbalance often presents as menstrual cycle irregularities, anovulation and, symptoms of PMS. PMS is a condition comprising of physiological and psychological symptoms, such as bloating, breast tenderness, muscle pain, acne, mood swings, cravings and insomnia. It affects nearly 40% of women of reproductive age and its onset is typically 1-2 weeks prior to the start of menstruation. Although there is no single explanation for the cause of PMS symptoms, it is believed to be primarily caused by hormonal imbalance, specifically, an increase in the hormone prolactin which causes a subsequent abnormal decrease in progesterone levels. Alternative approaches to reduce PMS symptoms involve correcting hormonal imbalances and improving mood neurotransmitters.
