Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the citrus flavonoids hesperidin and hesperetin: An updated review of their molecular mechanisms and experimental models

A 2015 study investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of two flavonoids: hesperidin and hesperetin. Researchers found that both these flavonoids activated not one, but two distinct pathways/functions of reducing and preventing oxidative damage.  References: Parhiz H, Roohbakhsh A, Soltani F, Rezaee R, Iranshahi M. A Review of Micronutrients and the Immune System-Working in Harmony to Reduce the Risk of Infection.

In this 2020 review it was concluded that vitamin C plays an intricate role on the immune system. It is crucial in maintaining the physical barrier of cells, especially the mucosal layer in the respiratory tract. It promotes collagen synthesis, thereby providing a protective barrier to cells.  References: Gombart, A. F., Pierre, A., & Maggini, …

Efficacy of Vitamin C Supplementation on Collagen Synthesis and Oxidative Stress After Musculoskeletal Injuries: A Systematic Review.

In this 2018 systematic review 10 articles (preclinical) were included in the final analysis. These studies demonstrated that vitamin C increases type 1 collagen fibres, scar tissue formation and accelerates bone healing after fracture.  References: DePhillipo, N. N., Aman, Z. S., Kennedy, M. Clinical Applications of Astaxanthin in the Treatment of Ocular Diseases: Emerging Insights

This review, published in 2020, reviewed all the published evidence – preclinical and clinical – for the use of astaxanthin for ocular health. Preclinical evidence supports the use of astaxanthin in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma, cataracts, keratopathy and dry eyes.  References:  Giannaccare, G., Pellegrini, M., Senni, C., Bernabei, F., Scorcia, V., & Cicero, …

Supplementation with dietary astaxanthin combined with collagen hydrolysate improves facial elasticity and decreases matrix metalloproteinase-1 and -12 expression: A comparative study with placebo

This randomized, placebo-controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effect astaxanthin, in combination with collagen hydrolysate supplementation on moderately photoaged skin. The results suggest that a combination of astaxanthin and collagen hydrolysate can improve elasticity and barrier integrity in photoaged skin.

Positive effects of astaxanthin on lipid profiles and oxidative stress in overweight subjects.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study investigated the effects of astaxanthin supplementation on lipid profiles and oxidative stress biomarkers in obese and overweight individuals. The results showed a significant decrease in LDL cholesterol and ApoB in the astaxanthin supplemented group, compared to the placebo group.    References:   Kim, J. H., Chang, M. J., Choi, H. D., …
