Does Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) Supplementation Attenuate Muscle Damage Markers and Soreness after Resistance Exercise in Trained Males? A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

This meta-analysis published in 2021 relating to the effect of BCAAs supplementation on plasma muscle damage markers and soreness after resistance exercise in only trained males. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 278  participants ranging from 21.5 to 24.7 years old. Study length ranged from 1-28 days and supplementation schedules included …

Medicinal properties of Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) Wight & Arn.: A review.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Kapoor et al., in 2016 found 100 patients with coronary artery disease given 500 mg arjuna twice daily in addition to conventional therapy had significant decreases in hyperlipidemia and in multiple inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF-alpha.   References; Amalraj A, Gopi S. Efficacy of Terminalia arjuna in chronic stable angina: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study comparing Terminalia arjuna with isosorbide mononitrate

In this 2002 double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 58 males with chronic stable angina were recruited.  Arjuna treatment was associated with significantly decreased angina frequency and the need for isosorbide dinitrate use.   References: Bharani A, Ganguli A, Mathur LK, et al. (2002). Efficacy of Terminalia arjuna in chronic stable angina: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study comparing …

Short-term adjuvant therapy with Terminalia arjuna attenuates ongoing inflammation and immune balance in patients with stable coronary artery disease: In vitro and in vivo evidence.

In a 2015 placebo-controlled trial, 116 patients with stable coronary artery disease were given either 500 mg T. arjuna twice daily, or a placebo. After three months of treatment, arjuna therapy significantly down-regulated triglycerides, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and other inflammatory markers compared to placebo.     References: Kapoor D, Trikha D, Vijayvergiya R, et al. (2015). …

A randomized, double blind placebo controlled study of efficacy and tolerability of Withania somnifera extracts in knee joint pain.

This study from 2016 is a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, testing the dose-dependent effects of W. somnifera in patients with knee joint pain and discomfort.  At the end of 12 weeks the high dose (i.e., 250 mg BID) group showed improvements earlier at 4 weeks and had a more significant reduction in the VAS scores …

Role of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) in the management of male infertility

From 2018 this comprehensive review assessed the available evidence supporting use of Withania somnifera extracts on the management of male fertility concerns. Specifically relating to semen quality, sperm count, motility and androgens. Authors concluded that preclinical evidence supports the reduction in oxidative stress related to male infertility and may offer a promising therapeutic option.  References: …

The effect of eight weeks of supplementation with Eleutherococcus senticosus on endurance capacity and metabolism in humans

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Eleutherococcus senticosus (ES) supplementation on endurance capacity, cardiovascular functions and metabolism of recreationally trained males for eight weeks. This is the first well-conducted study that shows that eight week ES supplementation enhances endurance capacity, elevates cardiovascular functions and alters the metabolism for sparing glycogen …
