In a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, 39 elderly subjects (aged 60 to 78 years) were given either 1 g of anserine/carnosine daily or placebo for three months. Pre- and post-treatment tests revealed that the carnosine group had significant preservation of delayed recall verbal memory compared to the placebo group. The carnosine group also had decreased levels of serum inflammatory cytokines (IL-8 and CCL-2).
