In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover pilot study, 12 pre-diabetic patients with dyslipidemia were given 600 mg of alpha-lipoic acid or a placebo daily for 30 days. Treatment with lipoic acid resulted in a significant decrease in fasting insulin levels and a decrease in HOMA-IR compared to the placebo.
