This prospective, open-label observational study was conducted to investigate the effect of PHGG in symptom relief on constipation-predominant IBS according to gender, age and body mass index (BMI). The study protocol comprised a two week run-in period followed by a four week study period in which patients received treatment with partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG). An overall improvement of the abdominal swelling, an increase in the number and quality of evacuations and a reduction in the CTT was observed in participants. It was showed that the number of evacuations is significantly enhanced following the ingestion of fiber in women, in patients ≥45 years and in those with BMI ≥ 25.
