Astaxanthin is a unique carotenoid with powerful antioxidant properties. Carotenoids are yellow, red, and orange natural pigments produced by algae, plants and some bacteria.
AORâs astaxanthin is a natural extraction from microalgae called Haematococcus pluvialis. H. pluvialis being the most studied source of astaxanthin.
Unlike many common antioxidants which tend to have both antioxidant and pro-oxidant properties, astaxanthin is a pure antioxidant that does not turn into a free radical during the process of quenching free radicals.Â

Antioxidant properties
Astaxanthin is best known as a potent antioxidant due to its unique molecular structure where it can trap free radicals and scavenge them to stop chain reaction damage. It itself does not turn into a free radical and helps prevent free radicals from attacking the fatty acid layer in cell membranes. This potent antioxidant is at least 10 times stronger, in terms of antioxidant capacity, than β-carotene and other carotenoids and close to 1000 times more effective as an antioxidant than vitamin E.
Reduces premature aging of skin
Astaxanthin derived from H. pluvialis microalgae has proven to be effective at protecting from ultraviolet radiation therefore reducing premature aging of skin and reducing chances of skin cancer.
Helps preserve vision
The benefits of astaxanthin for eyes include helping to reduce eye strain, limiting chances of eye diseases and slowing age-related vision deterioration. Damage from the sun and blue light from devices can negatively affect eye health. Due to the powerful antioxidant nature from the pigments in this carotenoid, it can prevent further damage by inhibiting inflammation.
It should be noted that much of the astaxanthin available in the market is produced synthetically using petrochemicals due to cost-efficiency for mass production. AOR uses Astaxanthin found in nature and produced by extraction of Hematococcus pluvialis biomass.
