Zingiber officinale also known as ginger is a flowering plant that originated from China and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and is closely related to turmeric, cardamom and galangal. Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger, which is responsible for its antioxidant effects. Gingerols are plentiful, pungent and found in fresh roots, the most abundant in ginger is 6-gingerol.
