Isoflavones are phytoestrogens that are mainly found in soy but can be found in other legumes as well. The most highly researched isoflavones are genistein and daidzein. Soy isoflavones (genistein and daidzein) have been shown to mimic the effects of estrogen, genistein structurally resembles estrogen and acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator.
Since soy is one of the most well-known phytoestrogens, the most researched and also the most controversial the 2011 report by the North American Menopause Society states that soy-based isoflavones established safety and modest efficacy.
