Citrus bergamia, Bergamot
Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) is a citrus fruit native to the coastal Calabrian region of Italy. A member of the Rutaceae family, the fruit is the size of an orange, yet similar in color to a lime or even yellowish, depending on the ripeness. Bergamot extracts are particularly rich in flavones and flavonones including: neoeriocitrin, naringin and neohesperidin. All been isolated and identified in bergamot.

Flavonoids can counter the LDL-C increases that result from a high-fat diet. Such flavonoid treatment is also associated with an increase in HDL-C. HDL scavenging of cholesterol prevents the inflammatory reaction that propagates plaque development. Consequently, by reducing LDL-C and increasing HDL-C, flavonoid therapy may have multiple modes of action with regard to cholesterol clearance. Flavonoids can also increase uptake of plasma cholesterol by the liver, by up-regulation of LDL receptors on the surface of hepatocytes.
Antioxidant properties can prevent inflammation associated with vascular damage
Bergamot contains a diverse and concentrated flavonoid profile, making it beneficial for many cardiovascular processes. Flavonoids, particularly those derived from bergamot, have broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism likely involves a direct inhibition of the pro-inflammatory NF-κB pathway. Since inflammation is a major driver of atherosclerosis, particularly through the NF-κB pathway, this represents one means by which flavonoids control development and progression of CVD.
