Reduces pain and systemic inflammation
The mechanism of action of boswellic acids is similar to the action of NSAIDs. Prostaglandins and leukotrienes are two classes of arachidonic acid-derived mediators of inflammation. Leukotrienes, for which 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX) is the key enzyme in synthesis, are considered to be involved in the initiation and maintenance of various inflammatory diseases, for example arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, asthma etc. Boswellic acids are potent inhibitors of 5-lipooxygenase products (inflammatory mediators).
Supports healthy joint function
Boswellia increases spaces in bones to allow cartilage to grow and with its anti-inflammatory properties, it can allow the joints to repair by significantly reducing the degeneration of joint protective glycosaminoglycan (GAGs). Boswellic acids have also been shown to decrease the prevalence of matrix metalloproteinases in the synovial fluid of joints. These enzymes are often over expressed in osteoarthritis patients and have been implicated in the degradation of cartilage in the joints.

A study done in 2001 compared Boswellia and anti-inflammatory prescription drugs in treating inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Boswellia showed as an effective treatment in these conditions.
Boswellia trees can produce exudates of good quality for only three years. The oleo gum-resin of B. serrata is tapped from the incision made on its trunk in the spring and harvested all through the summer and autumn. It is then stored in special bamboo basket to remove its oil content and to solidify the resin. The semi-solid gum-resin remains in the basket for about a month during which its fluid content (‘ras’) flows out.
The oleo gum-resins of B. serrata contain 30-60% resin, 5-10% essential oils and polysaccharides. The resinous part contains monoterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, tetracyclic triterpenic acids and four major β-configured pentacyclic triterpenic acids: 1) β-boswellic acid (BA), 2) 3-acetyl-β-boswellic acid (ABA), 3) 11-keto-β-boswellic acid (KBA), and 4) 3-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA). The pentacyclic triterpenoids or boswellic acids, are reaching about 14% (w/w) in the lipophilic fractions of BSE and are regarded as biologically and pharmacologically active compounds.
