Green Lipped FFA contains omega-3 fatty acids from the green lipped-mussel of New Zealand, which has unique benefits for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis not seen with standard omega-3 supplements. AOR’s Green Lipped FFA is a concentrated fatty acid extract, making it much more potent than common dried mussel products.

Green Lipped FFA is an excellent alternative to conventional fish oils for anyone who wants to address inflammation, or simply to increase their intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

AOR Advantage

Green Lipped FFA is the stable free fatty acid mixture of the New Zealand green-lipped mussel. This compound contains a unique profile of omega-3 and other fatty acids not found in significant amounts in standard fish oil supplements. Studies show that this unique fatty acid extract with its physiological effects is more effective against inflammation than conventional fish oils.

Treatment of Mild to Moderate Osteoarthritis (OA)

Study #1:

This systematic review published in 2008 evaluates the efficacy of the nutritional supplement Perna Canaliculus (green-lipped mussel, GLM). The review includes four randomized controlled trials (three of which were placebo controlled, while the fourth was a comparative trial of lipid and powder extracts.) No RCTs comparing GLM to conventional treatment were identified. All four studies assessed GLM as an adjunctive treatment to conventional medication for a clinically relevant time in mild to moderate OA. All trials reported clinical benefits in the GLM treatment group but the findings from two studies cannot be included in this review because of possible un-blinding and inappropriate statistical analysis. The data from the two more rigorous trials, in conjunction with our re-analysis of original data suggests that GLM may be superior to placebo for the treatment of mild to moderate OA. As a credible biological mechanism exists for this treatment, further rigorous investigations are required to assess efficacy and optimal dosage.

Study #2:

This open label, single group allocation study from 2012, 21 subjects with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Over eight weeks subjects were given 3,000 mg/day of GLM extract After 8 weeks subjects were assessed based on range of motion tests, the WOMAC score, and gastrointestinal scales compared with baseline. Green-lipped mussel significantly improved knee joint pain, stiffness and mobility by 49% in OA patients. Further gastrointestinal function scores were also improved.

Study #3:

This 2017 review specifically examined the beneficial effect of the Perna canaliculus (green lipped mussel extract) in regulation of the intestinal microbiome in addition to reviewing the immunomodulatory, cardiovascular, antimicrobial and antiarthritic effects. The review offers specific insights into mechanisms of action in each category offering that have been shown to increase green-lipped mussels may lead to prebiotic as well as production of short chain fatty acids such as butyrate, both of which can indirectly also improve symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee. Further the content of omega 3 fatty acids present in green lipped muscles is consistent with data indicating fatty acids favourably alter the intestinal microbiome. Omega 3 fatty acid rich supplements as potential therapeutic agents for arthritic diseases, metabolic syndrome and associated complications.

Study #4:

In one of the earliest human clinical studies relating to the use of Perna canaliculus for therapeutic purposes. This randomized, double-blind, controlled trial involving osteoarthritis sufferers, significant improvements were reported in morning stiffness, joint tenderness and measures of joint functionality during the double-blinded phase among subjects taking the SDA/ETA-rich oil. Assessment by doctors and patients concluded that 70% of the persons with osteoarthritis had experienced a good response.

 Improves Wheezing in Asthma

Study #1:

This study from 2002 is assessed the effect of New Zealand green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, on asthmatic patients. The eight week study double-blind randomised, placebo- controlled clinical trial enrolled 46 patients to understand if two capsules BID of a standardised proprietary extract could improve peak expiratory flow (PEF) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as markers of airway inflammation. Researchers found that after eight weeks there was a significant decrease in daytime wheeze, the concentration of exhaled H2O2 and an increase in morning PEF in the lipid extract group compared to the placebo group.
